Grammar School Memories
Thank you to those members who have put down their
memories of the old Grammar School days. These are likely to stimulate
some fond memories for many and some chilling reminders for others!!
Les Litton - 1937 to 1942
Traveled daily from Burnham on Sea [Highbridge] to Taunton by train - at first six days a week with Thursday pm allocated to sport at Rose Meadow.
There were six [if my memory is correct] pupils on the train and I remember Clarrie Richards, Mike Hauser [who died young], a Woodman, plus Francis Turner, David Young and myself who started together in 1937.
I still remember our daily walks from the railway station to school [via Tangier]. even through the early war years, if we missed the 8.03[another train at 8.40ish came along!
The headmaster was Arnold Goodliffe and I remember attending his funeral at St. Mary's.
His successor was "Ginger" Rutt who was still there when I left in 1942.
I had the pleasure of playing for the soccer first eleven at Rose meadows the school playing cricket at the County Ground against the staff.
Is there anyone out there that remembers the daily lunchtime visits to the cafe!!? at the bottom of East Reach?
I remember several of the staff during my time, as follows:-
Messrs:
Wickenden [who wrote A history of Taunton] and was my housemaster in Quantock House.
Eele [sports and English]
Hunt [Basher to his Friends]
Hayes [Cheeser]
Wheeler [music]
Trevett [French] plus flowing black cape]
Desa [art]
Mitford [English]
If anyone is interested and can add to the above memory notes, then I [if no one else] would be very interested.
